An interview can sometimes be unsuccessful because of intrapersonal/psychological barriers but strategies can be used to minimise this barrier. Do you agree/disagree?

An interview is basically a conversation between two or more people whereby the questions are asked and answers come forth. An interview can as well be referred as a one-on-one conversation with one individual who acts as an interviewer and the other is the interviewee. The interviewer asks questions and the interviewee responds to them. The participants can take turns to talk. Interviews involve the transfer of information basically from the interviewee to the interviewer. This is normally the primary purpose or the reason of the interview. Information transfer can as well happen in both the directions simultaneously. Most interviews take place face-to-face though the introduction of digital means such as the internet has made it easy for communication to be among people who are geographically apart.

In this paper, the discussion will basically be about everything regarding an interview. First of all, the perception of whether psychological or intrapersonal barriers are may lead to failure in an interview is discussed. Secondly, a discussion is carried out on the considerations to be made before making a job application. A suggestion of how one needs to handle themselves in an interview will also be addressed. Interviews involve communication and the larger part of it involves oral communication. The barriers to this communication will and the causes of the barriers listed. These are among the issues that will be discussed at length.

Interviews are very important and one needs to be careful when going for one so as not to stand the risk of losing the job. On to the argument, there are several reasons why an interview can be unsuccessful which we will discuss later in this paper. I totally agree that an interview can sometimes be unsuccessful because of intrapersonal/psychological barriers but strategies can be used to minimise this barrier. According to Karen, (2015), these barriers are the ones that stem from the individuals habits or attitudes and include the varied perceptions that one may have which make them think differently than others or act in a different but negative way. Wrong assumptions can also be a reason for the unsuccessfulness of a job interview.

The psychological/ intrapersonal barriers are basically the beliefs that one possesses about themselves that are in regards to their potential, ability and self-worth. They can as well be referred to as the unhealthy or incorrect pattern of thinking. This may include a person’s perception that they lack social support, denial, the lack of knowledge on something or the dysfunctional attitude that one may have towards a particular situation. These include the situations where one can make exclamations such as I don’t know how to do this or I don’t have time and many more. This can be developed under any and everything but can as well be cleared.

Psychological/intrapersonal barriers can be broken easily. This however needs one to make a personal decision. It needs one to be very persistent by all means. When one keeps trying many times until they make it, they are likely to influence others. It all starts when one chooses to believe that it is possible for them to do something and they fight until they achieve that (Karen, 2015). This has been listed among the factors that causes one to have an unsuccessful interview and thus one needs to make a personal decision that will help them in implementing this before they set out for an interview.

Before one first of all gets a call to attend an interview, they have to understand that there are several things that one has to put into consideration before they apply for any job. A persons experience and skills are the things that gives someone an assurance that they can apply for a particular job. This is however not what needs to be put into consideration before making an application for a job. According to Abdel-Halim, (2012), one of the things that need to be put into consideration is the satisfaction that one may have in the job in order to utilize their skills in the job. A consideration of who one will be working with, if one’s happiness in the workplace is assured and whether one needs to land on it.

It is very important to make assessment of the type of management. Everyone has the ability to do well in a different type of environment. This depends on the management one is given on a daily basis. Does one need to be monitored constantly or left to work on their own? Do they have the ability to monitor themselves if they have to work remotely? One needs to make a consideration on what worked out and what didn’t work out if at all they have been employed before. The corporate culture as well needs to be considered. The values important to the company need to be known (Abdel-Halim, 2012). Are you in agreement with them?

The type of personality can enable one to learn a lot of things about their work style. Does one prefer introversion or extraversion? Is a quiet working environment suitable or a bustling one? The work and life balance is very important as well as one needs to make a consideration of whether the working hours are favourable with their day to day schedule. This can bring much stress in one’s life if they do not put it into consideration. The company stability needs to be considered as well. It does not hurt to dig deeper into the company’s financial stability as well as its growth. It helps one to make a determination as to whether they will be looking for a new job in the near future or not (Abdel-Halim, 2012).

There are several things that one also needs to put into consideration when in an interview. First of all, one needs to ensure that they have a proper dressing code as it gives an impression of who you really are and as we know, first impression matters a lot. One also needs to get to the interview on time and the venue should be considered as well. It is also important to arrive a little bit early, at least 10 minutes early before the start of the interview. Everyone met should as well be treated with a lot of respect and courtesy as the opinions they have on you may play a bigger role in the employment decisions. Offer a firm handshake and maintain an eye contact with your interviewer and everyone else in the room all through the interview and be confident to ask for clarification whenever you do not understand a question. Be honest with all the answers given and be thorough in responses (Black, 2001). These are among the very important things that should be considered as they will make a determination as to whether the job will be awarded or not.

Oral communication is very important as well as the most important aspect in an interview. When a person is a good communicator, ensuring the passage of messages appropriately and understanding of whatever is being said is mandatory. One needs to have an idea of the existence of the barriers to communication and thus speak in simple grammar and using the terms that are understandable. Asking for feedback and giving examples as well makes it easier for the listener to understand what they are saying (McCroskey, 012). However, a good communicator needs to understand that communication barriers exist and there are several factors that lead to it.

The differences in the perception is one of the factors as people with different age experience, nationality and education view things quite differently (John, 2014). The lack of the fundamental knowledge needed might also be a reason that would lead to a barrier in communication as when the person you are involved with in the communication does not have the intellectual capacity that would enable them understand whatever you are passing across, this will definitely lead to a communication barrier. Strong emotions can be another cause as well as when one receive a particular information when they are experiencing very strong emotions may hinder them from having the ability to discuss and reason sensibly. Bias or prejudice is another reason for this because the person we are talking to can basically ignore our ideas once they have bias (John, 2014). The lack of interest in the message that is being put forth may also lead to distortion in the message. A faulty system of passing information can cause the barriers if there is an omission in an information or vague words are used may lead to people not understanding the message. One thus needs to be aware of these barriers to communication and be ready to tackle each one of them especially once they notice communication isn’t clear between them. The most important aspect in solving these communication barriers is by making adjustments according to the situation and timing and as well as clearing anything that might cause a hindrance in the same.

To sum it up, as we have seen in the discussion above. There are reasons that can lead to the unsuccessfulness of a job interview and intrapersonal or psychological barriers are among them. This can however, as discussed, be dealt with but requires a person to make a personal decision. The hints to on how to handle oneself before and during an interview as well have been given and is meant to guide the interviewees all along the whole process. It is also clear that communication and in this case oral communication is very important in an interview and in this case the steps for a good oral communication have been suggested as well as the barriers to communication.
