Assignment 4: Designing and Developing E-Learning Course
Part A Course Content – Described
Course Title and Course ID
The course provided would be Human Resource Management. The course ID would be BUS 005. The course would provide the fundamental knowledge on human resource management.
Welcoming Announcement and Goals of the Course
Human resource management refers to the function of an organization that focuses on the recruitment, management, and directing of people who work for an organization. As such, it focuses on issues related to compensation, wellness, performance management, benefits, employee motivation, safety, and several other related issues. Human resource management may play a major role in determining the ability of an organization to achieve its goals and objectives.
I plan to develop a course on human resource management for this class. The first goal of the course would be to demonstrate the mission of human resource management in both a wider organizational perspective and a narrower organizational perspective.
The second goal of the course would be to show how planning, evaluation, and improvement might help in the development of competency in relation to human resource management.
The third goal of the course is to determine the government laws and regulations affecting employers and employees.
Books and Resources
The textbook that will be used during the course is Human Resource Management, 6th Edition: Theory and Practice by John Bratton and Jeff Gold. McMillan Education is the drafter of the book. This book was chosen as it provides a rich knowledge of the contemporary issues related to human resource management. Students would be required to read chapters I to V of the book. The quizzes and examinations of the course would be based on the readings in the above chapters. Supplementary material would be available on the course website. Despite the fact that these materials would be vital in the projects and future job search of the students, they will not be tested on these materials. The instructor will also provide other materials on “as needed basis.” Students are also expected to read the internet as it would be a vital part of the course.
Learning Outcomes for the First Three Weeks of Instruction
The learning outcome for the first three weeks of the course include:
Acquire and portray a clear understanding of the vital role of human resource management in an organization.
Acquire and portray a clear understanding of what constitutes recruiting, selecting, hiring, compensating, training, appraising, developing, reprimanding, elevating, demoting, and firing of employees in relation to human resource management.
Acquire and portray a clear understanding of various laws on potential employees and employees.
Acquire and portray a clear understanding of the challenges of human resource management and knowledge of developing viable solutions to tackle the challenges.
Instructional Strategies
Discussions, case studies, and self-directed learning would be the three main instructional strategies that would be used in the course. Discussion is one of the most effective instructional strategies for online learning among adults. One of its main benefits is that if fosters active, participatory learning. As such, it is the most respectful instructional strategy to the learners. Discussion will encourage students to analyze alternative methods of thinking and acting. In addition, it would encourage the learners to explore their individual experiences, which would improve their critical thinking skills. Discussions would use both asynchronous communication and synchronous communication. Asynchronous communication refers to recorded information whereas synchronous communication refers to real-time communication. As such, the course would incorporate Multi-user Object Oriented Environment (MOOs) since it would use two types of communication strategies simultaneously. MOO would improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the course.
As stated by Anderson & Schiano (2014), any good education program focusing primarily on adults should be experiential. The educational program should draw from the experiences of the participants of the program. The educational program should also be participatory and have an action component that is related to a future experience. Case study is the instructional strategy that meets these conditions. Use of a case study would present the learners with a problem situation that is related to their interests and experience levels. The problem situation should also be related to the concept under investigation. The case study would detail the facts related to the problem, its context, and people related to the case. Case study will present the learners with the solution to the problem, which would help them apply a similar solution when faced with an identical problem in real-life. While undertaking the course, case study would be done by the students in groups. The members of the group would be provided with the opportunity to brainstorm their views on the issues related to the case. Use of case study will increase the ability of learners grasping the concepts being taught, as it would highlight the application of the concepts.
Self-directed learning is also one of the instructional strategies used in the course. Self-directed learning would task the students with the responsibility of learning the concepts related to the course. According to Giuseffi (2017), taking an initiative in learning enables a student to learn better. In addition, it enables an individual to retain the knowledge learned in a better manager and apply it whenever necessary. Since the course would be delivered online, it would support self-directed learning. Use of self-directed learning will require students to learn at their own pace and convenience. The students will have a huge archive and database resources that will provide them with the knowledge they require. Students can search various online libraries or websites for the information they require.
