Moderation practices comprise of all assessment events. Moderation ensures assignments are designed to ensure they are related to the related to the intended learning outcomes. It is vital to ensure there are pre-marking meetings or other related activities since they enable the assessors to clarify the comprehension of the assessment criteria. In addition, it is vital for the students to be informed the assessment criteria. They should be informed prior to the assessment and when providing them with feedback after they have completed the assessments.

Therefore, moderation practices for assessment in adult learning can be developed during the pre-assessment phase and after when providing feedback. In such a situation, the assessments should be reviewed regularly to ensure. In addition, the frequency of the assessments, style of assessment, and the success rate of the students should be used to improve the assessment. To ensure there is effective moderation practices for assessments in an adult learning environment, there marking criteria, cross marking, and discussion of standards. In addition, there should be no bulkpost-hoc adjustment of the students’ marks.

Another method that can be used in the development of moderation practices in an adult learning environment is by reviewing all the learning items collaboratively with the markers and assessors. This would help in setting or making amendments to the learning items as necessary. This would make it easy to implement the moderation practices since there would be a consensus during the marking exercise. For instance, there may be consensus on the double or triple marking of certain anonymous items.
