Criteria describe the aspects of the performance that is assessed. The criteria should align with and cover all aspects of learning outcomes. Assessment criteria capture what is vital and central to a certain area of study. Nevertheless, it should be noted that criteria does not comprise of the aspects of performance that are not critical and intrinsic to the type of discipline or activity. Most courses usually have 3 to 10 assessment criteria. Each of these criteria is ideally of equal importance. The criteria should be meaningful to the specific course. The criteria should not be so generic that they can be applied in any course (Cizek, 2013).
On the other hand, standards describe the characteristics of the performance in terms of the criteria at each of the levels of rating. Performance standards detail the level of achievement that that should be attained. Therefore, they define the level of quality, performance, or achievement. Standards comprise of two dimensions, which include what they are describing and the levels of performance they aspire to describe. As such, standards describe the performance of students. They also describe the performance of students at various levels.
Criteria can be used in the development of assessment in the workplace. Some of the assessment criteria that can be used in the workplace include the number of erroneous products made by an employee and the time taken to complete a certain task. The standards that would be assessed would require employee at a certain level to perform their activities at a certain rate. Satisfactory Achievement and High Achievement are some of the standards that would be used in the assessment in the workplace.
